Optimal Dental Health – Drink Matcha!

Oral hygiene should be a top priority for everyone: not just so that those around us can enjoy our clean fresh breath, but also because optimal dental health prevents a plethora of other complicated health issues, including mouth ulcers, cardiovascular disease, and oral cancers. It is scientifically proven that oral health and gum disease have a strong link to heart disease. This is due to certain bacteria's which reside in the mouth.

According to Japanese custom, those who drink plenty of matcha green tea experience fewer cavities in their teeth and a lower incidence of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). Science now supports this claim.

School children in China who drink green tea daily enjoy much better dental health – and as matcha tea is much higher in goodness than simple green tea, it makes sense that the benefits of matcha will be exponentially higher.

How can drinking matcha green tea keep your mouth in pristine condition?

  • Matcha green tea is sky high in content of catechins – these antioxidants have a strong antibacterial action which inhibits the bacteria's that cause cavities. Imagine each mouthful of matcha green tea as an army of microscopic warriors, scrubbing plaque from your teeth to prevent disease and cavities.
  • Matcha has widespread antibacterial properties, which work not just on the teeth, but on the whole mouth, including the palate, tongue, and throat. This prevents bacteria from adhering to the teeth and also limits the production of harmful acids caused by these bacteria's. Vegans are especially at risk, with a higher acid content in the mouth than non-vegans. Drinking matcha is the simple answer for lowering acid content in the mouth.
  • Matcha tastes refreshing and leaves your breath feeling and smelling clean – unlike coffee which is a renowned culprit for less than stellar breath. Also, unlike coffee, matcha green tea won’t stain your teeth.

A cup of hot matcha tea, or a glass of iced matcha, is a perfect and delicious after-meal treat which is akin to brushing your teeth. It cleanses and refreshes the entire mouth, and packs a real punch in guaranteeing your overall health and wellbeing.

What are you waiting for? Bottoms up!

Love Your Body with Matcha

We all know that Matcha green tea powder is bursting with all manner of goodness for your overall well-being, and that drinking at least a cup of matcha green tea each and every day will serve you well.  Each cup delivers a big dose of antioxidants and amino acids which fight disease, it reduces stress and enhances calm - and it also tastes fantastic.

But did you know that matcha green tea powder can also be beneficial to use on the outside of your body?

Here is a wonderful recipe we found for a fresh, homemade Matcha Mint Body Scrub. It looks and smells good enough to eat – but you actually use it on your skin! Think of it as a luxurious, refreshing body treat...

You Will Need:

  • 2 mint tea bags (peppermint, spearmint, or wintergreen)
  • 2 teaspoons of matcha green tea powder
  • 1 cup of Epsom salts
  • ¼ cup of organic coconut oil
  • 10 drops of peppermint 100% essential oil

What to Do:

Cut the mint tea bags open and empty the leaves into a bowl. Whisk in the matcha green tea powder and the Epson salts until well combined. Stir in the peppermint oil and the coconut oil until all is mixed thoroughly. Store the mixture in a sealed, airtight container in a cool and dark place.

If you want to, you can also add a chamomile tea bag to the mix, or even a couple of drops of tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil. Just be careful to use these oil sparingly as some people’s skin can be sensitive – so don’t use more than a drop or two.

Use the body scrub in the bath or shower. It not only makes your skin glow and works as a natural exfoliant, it softens the skin beautifully. The chlorophyll content of the green tea can help balance the pH of the body, and the refreshing aromas of this scrub are perfect for helping to clear a stuffy head when you have a cold or even the flu. It is a wonderful mood enhancer and pick-me-up.

Make this treat for yourself or even as a gift for another. Once you try it, you’ll always want to have a fresh batch on hand!

Using Matcha in Savoury Cooking

We all know how great Matcha Green Tea is to drink, hot or cold, and we all know that Matcha makes for delicious and unique flavour additions to desserts and sweet treats. But what about used in savoury cooking? How does the goodness of matcha go with entrees, mains, lunched, and breakfasts?

Matcha is awesome for seasoning and enhancing an array of savoury dishes. Here are just a few ideas...

Matcha Seasoning

Mix one part Matcha green tea powder with two parts sea salt. It tastes totally amazing on eggs!

Matcha Fish Rub

Crush almonds, walnuts, and pistachios in a food processor with Matcha green tea powder, and roll a piece of fish in beaten eggs followed by the mixture before baking it. It is crunchy and flavoursome – and very healthy.

Matcha Marinade

Make a hot matcha tea mix and thicken it with honey, pepper, and sea salt. Use the liquid to marinade beef, tofu, or mushrooms.

Matcha Pasta Sauce

1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder

400g zucchini

Small handful of raisins (soaked in warm water then drained)

½ cup ground pistachios

Fresh fennel leaves

Olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste if desired

Pasta

Sauté sliced or cubed zucchini in olive oil, tossing the pieces constantly. Add Matcha, raisins, and nuts. Toss together and season with salt and pepper. Add cooked pasta, fennel leaves, and a splash of the pasta cooking water. Drizzle with olive oil.

There really are no limits with Matcha!

Keep the Doctor Away with Matcha Each Day

The old saying goes, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. And anything that keeps the doctor away  has to be a good thing, right?

We’re excited to tell you that apples have got nothing on matcha green tea!

Matcha green tea is a super-food and it has a profound effect on the immune system. Scientific research has proven that the green tea polyphenols in matcha powder boost the body’s natural immunity, and fight  a range of autoimmune diseases.

Here’s why drinking matcha every day will keep the doctor away:

  •  It has an anti-inflammatory effect – the more matcha you drink, the more your allergic reactions will be suppressed. This is great news for those of us who suffer from seasonal allergies!
  • Matcha contains L-theanines and catechins which have an anti-viral effect – great for staving off the flu.
  • Antioxidants, which fight diseases like cancer, are bursting in matcha green tea. Levels per gram in matcha are more than six times the concentration of goji berries; seven times that found in the darkest chocolate; seventeen times those in wild blueberries; and more than sixty times that found in spinach. A little cup of matcha packs a huge antioxidant punch.
  • Matcha powder has a chemical called epigallocatchin gallate (EGCG) which is antibacterial and works against micro-bodies which cause illness, including Candida.

Studies suggest that, for optimal immunity, we should drink five cups of regular green tea every day. One cup of matcha equals eight to ten cups of regular green tea – double the recommended dose. It not only boosts immunity, it clears damaging free radicals from the body, and protects the kidneys.

So who wants to join us, and raise their daily cup of matcha to optimal immunity and wellness? Cheers.

Matcha-Mint Iced Tea

Matcha-mint iced tea

One really refreshing, delicious summer drink we love is Matcha Mint Iced Tea.

We all know that matcha is loaded with nutrients and that it tastes great. You mightn’t be aware that mint is also full of goodness. Mint is a herb that people have used for hundreds of years as a medicinal plant. Mint is used:

  • As an appetiser to promote digestion
  • Soothes indigestion and inflammation
  • Alleviates headache and nausea
  • Relieves acne
  • Clears congestion in the nose and chest and prevents allergies
  • Is a natural stimulant that promotes alertness

Mint is super easy to grow for yourself in a pot in a sunny spot, on a windowsill or on a patio. The taste and aroma of fresh mint cut from the plant is amazing.

Mint goes really well with matcha – for a refreshing summer boost, try this recipe for Matcha Mint Iced Tea...

Per Serve:

  • 1 cup of filtered water
  • 1 cup of crushed ice
  • ½ lime, cut into slices
  • 1 teaspoon of matcha powder
  • A small bunch of mint leaves

Shake the water and matcha in a cocktail shaker or drink bottle really well until the matcha is fully dissolved. Add the ice, some lime juice, and mint leaves, and shake some more. To get the most out of the mint, tear a few of the mint leaves before adding them – this releases the flavour. Pour it all into a tall glass and add some lime slices. If you want to, you can add a little honey for sweetness.

If you’re more into a milky iced drink, you can easily substitute icy cold soy or almond milk for half of the water in this recipe. Make sure you dissolve the matcha in the water first before adding the milk, and shake it all really well before adding the ice and mint.

Surviving Your First Meditation Retreat

surviving your first mediation retreat

So, you want to meditate, but you just can’t seem to close down all those active, open tabs in your racing mind. Sound familiar? Going on a meditation retreat can be a fantastic way to kick-start the process of learning to meditate.

A meditation retreat is a whole day (or longer) where meditating in silence is your one focus. You want to quiet the mind so that only one single thought exists at a time – or, even better, no thoughts. You get to be fully present in the moment and just BE.

You can take a retreat anywhere, but getting away to an organised health or yoga retreat is probably the best way to get the most out of the experience and to guarantee no interruptions. When you read the fine print on these organised retreats, though, the schedule might seem daunting. Hours of sitting still in silence isn’t just hard, it’s physically uncomfortable. How on earth can that be conducive to meditation?

The trick is to come prepared. Here are some tips:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to arrive on the day without rushing or getting stressed.
  • Leave the car radio off as you travel to the retreat. Today is not the day to be listening to loud music or mindless drivel!
  • Bring a comfortable cushion to sit on.
  • Enjoy the silence – of not needing to make small talk, or to listen to the chatter of others.
  • Take it all one step at a time. Don’t worry about the long stretches of time ahead – it will pass. Just be.
  • Stretch when you need to.
  • Eat good, clean food, both during the retreat and for the few days before and after.
  • Drink matcha green tea. Have it any way you like it – as a cold energy drink, as an iced latte, or as a hot tea. It keeps you hydrated, refreshed, and focused, as well as calm and alert. You will be relaxed but not at all inclined to nod off.
  • Don’t force the process. Just focus on your breath, and let thoughts come and go. Trust that it will work for you and have no expectations.

Your first meditation retreat might seem like hard work – but the rewards are enormous. By the end of it, you will feel transformed – all for the better!
